Healthy Snacks for Pregnant Women

When you become pregnant your eating habits can become very erratic and sometimes you don’t want to eat at all.  In this time as your sense of smell and taste are going to be quite different it is important to eat things that you like otherwise it will often make you feel more sick.  Some things might be good for you but if when you cook it the smell of it makes you want to vomit its not going to make you feel any better.  So want you need to do is find healthy things that you enjoy eating, if you’re going to get through your pregnancy without putting on the pounds.

In the first few months of pregnancy many women have bad nausea and so eating and getting the right things inside of you can be a real problem.  However, it is really important that you do try and eat otherwise you will have no energy to do anything or to grow the baby inside of you. Pregnancy vitamins are good but they should not be the only source of vitamins and minerals in your diet.

The best things to eat are often the plainest.  Things like toast with butter and jam if you can handle it, or plain biscuits like digestives.  Many pregnant women like to keep a biscuit barrel by their bed so if hunger strikes then there is a handy supply of food if needed.  But try not to have too much chocolate as it can make you feel worse.

If at any point you can’t get any food down you and you keep throwing up everything that you eat then go to the hospital immediately. Some vomiting is perfectly normal but if it getting too much and you are not getting any sustenance from your food you must seek medical help.

Later on in the pregnancy after about 3 months or so, much of the sickness usually goes but this does not mean that eating can get any easier.  Often as you progress you get more and more tired and so the thought of making something healthy is too much.  But there are healthier alternatives to the bag of chips and chocolate bars that are so easier to much your way through.

Something that all supermarkets have is bags of nuts and dried fruit.  They are filling but are healthy so you can much away with a clean conscience.  Carrots are another good snack, you can buy carrot sticks but the prepared ones often don’t taste very good so it is better to peel and top and tail a fresh one.

Fresh fruit is another good snack to keep you going and if you get constipated can help you.  Grapes and apples are especially good as they are easy to pick up and need no preparation.  But any fruit will be good for you and you can have fun with some of the exotic fruit in your local store.  But be careful not to eat too much because it can make you too loose.

For a quick light meal cereals are a good way to go.  Make sure that you don’t choose the kids ones that are covered in chocolate with marshmallow bits!  The healthier cereals might not be as exciting but they will keep you going longer.

If you’re willing to cook a little things like ham and scrambled eggs on brown toast if you can handle it or white if you can’t handle being too healthy.  But if you’re feeling good why not add a bit of spinach or other salad.  When you are pregnant it is important to have some greens so finding some that you like and keep on it is the best way.  Spinach is a full of iron, not everyone likes it cooked but raw makes a good salad and doesn’t have that slimy texture.

Fitness for Pregnancy

With many women now working for several months of their pregnancy, preparing for being pregant is more important than ever.

If you’re planning to manage weight gain during your pregnancy, to help reduce or minimize stretch marks, then it’s important to plan ahead and not leave your fitness until you receive a positive pregnancy test.

There’s two key areas for staying fit & healthy during pregnancy – the first is your diet, what you’re eating.  The second is the amount of exercise you are having to ensure that you and the baby are in good shape.

You don’t need to commit to anything as expensive or time consuming as joining a gym to help improve or maintain your fitness.  It’s easy to take just a few minutes each day at home to run through a few simple exercises and stretches, as well as trying to take a short 15 minute walk every day.

For your diet, it’s important not to try and “eat for two” as the old saying goes.  In fact, you probably only need around 200-300 extra calories each day, over and above your usual diet.  So just one candy bar can take you well over the limit.  Instead, learn to snack on fresh or dried fruit, a piece of toast or a small low calorie snack that you find appealing.

Sign up with Pregnancy without Pounds for free exercise & eating tips.  Their program is tried and tested by thousands of women, to help maintain health & minimise excessive weight gain during pregnancy.
